For decades, the coal industry has been using one of the most deadly and destructive forms of coal mining, mountaintop removal mining, at the expense of the health of Appalachian communities.

Mountaintop removal mining uses explosives to blow the tops off mountains to access the coal seams beneath. This launches harmful particulates of silica, aluminum, and molybdenum into the atmosphere, contaminating the air that local communities must breathe and the water they must drink.

Instead of working to address this issue, the Trump administration cancelled a vital study that was looking into the health impacts of mountaintop removal mining. They did this after top Department of Interior officials met with representatives of the coal and mining industries.

It’s time for Congress to intervene by passing the Appalachian Community Health Emergency Act (ACHE Act). This act would put an emergency moratorium on all mountaintop removal mining activities until a comprehensive federal study of the health risks associated with this destructive practice can be completed.

We can’t stand by while this administration continues to put the interests of polluting, extractive industries over those of the people of Appalachia. We need Congress to act.

RE: HR 2050. Cosponsor the ACHE Act!

Dear Representative,

Mountaintop removal mining (MTR) is one of the most destructive forms of coal mining, involving literally blowing the tops off mountains to access the coal seams beneath. There's now clear scientific evidence that mountaintop removal mining is linked to birth defects and mortality from chronic cardiovascular diseases, and cancer is significantly higher in areas where MTR occurs.

That's why I'm urging you to act: Cosponsor the ACHE Act (HR 2050) introduced by Rep. Yarmuth (D-KY-3) and support Appalachian communities by taking a stand against mountaintop removal mining!

The ACHE Act would place an immediate, emergency moratorium on any new mountaintop removal mining permits and prohibit the expansion of any existing permits. Second, it would require the Department of Health and Human Services to launch a comprehensive federal health study. No new permits would be allowed until and unless the U.S. Secretary of Health declared mountaintop removal does not present a harm to human health. Finally, it would require air and water monitoring at all existing mountaintop removal mining sites, with results reported to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The ACHE Act is a smart approach for beginning to deal with a public health crisis that Appalachian communities have faced for far too long. I hope you will do your part to help the people of Appalachia by cosponsoring the ACHE Act!
