President Obama has done more than any previous president to lead the United States and the world in the battle against climate change. Last week he took another step toward a clean energy future, finalizing a plan that closes the Arctic and Atlantic oceans to expanded oil drilling for the next five years.

But times are changing. President-elect Trump has said he will expand offshore drilling. He could reverse Obama’s plan and open these seas to dangerous, dirty drilling.

Tell President Obama not to give him the chance.

With the stroke of a pen, President Obama could withdraw the Arctic and Atlantic oceans from expanded offshore drilling for good before he leaves office—and no future president acting alone could undo it.

Tell Obama to permanently protect the Arctic and Atlantic from offshore drilling—for the sake of our climate and our children’s future.

For a decade, Earthjustice has been in court fighting risky drilling in the Arctic Ocean. Now we have the opportunity to tell President Obama to protect this fragile region and the Atlantic Ocean for good.

Offshore oil drilling directly harms ocean life and risks devastating oil spills that history shows cannot be contained or cleaned. Offshore oil from undeveloped frontiers like the Arctic and Atlantic won’t come to market for decades, if ever. It has no legitimate place in our energy future. Permanently protecting these oil-free seas from future drilling makes enormous sense.

President Obama has done so much in the battle against climate change. Tell him to take the next step to permanently protect the Arctic and Atlantic oceans before he leaves office. It will soon be too late.

Excluding Arctic and Atlantic from Offshore Leasing

YOUR MESSAGE

Protect the Arctic and Atlantic from offshore oil drilling for good

Dear President Obama,

I am writing to thank you for all you have done to secure a brighter future for us and our children in the face of climate change, the greatest challenge of our time. You recently took another step toward a clean energy future--finalizing a plan that closes the Arctic and Atlantic oceans to expanded oil drilling for the next five years. Thank you.

But you can and must do more to protect these seas. President-elect Trump has said he will expand offshore drilling, and he can reverse your plan and open up the oil-free Arctic and Atlantic oceans to new drilling.

Please don't give him the chance. I urge you to build on the unprecedented progress you have already made by exercising your statutory authority to withdraw the Arctic and Atlantic oceans permanently from all future oil and gas leasing. This is an action the next president will not be able to undo on his own.

As you know, to avoid the worst impacts of climate disruption, we must not burn the large majority of already-proven global reserves, let alone unproven resources like those that may lie beneath the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. If extracted and burned at current rates, the already-leased federal fossil fuels would last well beyond the point when net carbon pollution must cease if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

It makes sense to start the process of dialing back fossil fuel production by withdrawing the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. No existing oil drilling jobs are at stake. The current lack of infrastructure for drilling either ocean means that oil production, if it can be done at all, would be decades away, arriving too late to fuel America's transition to a low-carbon economy. Development would also require massive public and private investments that should instead go into clean energy. And, of course, offshore oil drilling is dirty and dangerous, with no way effectively to clean or contain an oil spill in the ocean even under the best of conditions.

Your climate leadership has given this and future generations a chance. Clear presidential authority exists for you to add to those historic achievements in a way that the next president cannot alone undo. Please take Arctic and Atlantic ocean drilling off the table forever.

Sincerely,
