Coal-fired power plants are the biggest source of water pollution in the country. The toxics in coal plant waste raise the risks for developing cancer, make fish unsafe to eat, and can inflict lasting brain damage on children.

Now, at the request of polluting industries, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has ordered that vital safeguards against these poisons be put on indefinite hold, stalling all progress on protecting our waterways and communities from this dangerous source of pollution. Tell Scott Pruitt to stop polluting our waters.

After decades of federal inaction, the Obama administration in 2015 finalized a rule setting the first-ever national limits on the amount of mercury, arsenic, lead and other toxic pollutants that coal-fired power plants are allowed to dump into our waters. This rule makes sense. It sets achievable standards for reducing or eliminating toxic pollutants using readily available water treatment technology, in order to protect people from cancer risk, brain damage and other negative health impacts. It would also make fish safer to eat and waterways safer to swim in and drink from.

When Pruitt ordered an indefinite hold on the rule in late April, Earthjustice and our partners immediately challenged this unconscionable rollback in the courts.

Now, as required by law, the EPA is taking official public comments on Pruitt’s Toxic Water Rollback. Tell him to enforce these safeguards and stand up for clean water and public health—not polluter profits.

This is not the first, nor will it likely be the last, attack on clean water protections from the current EPA administrator. Help us make sure he knows that we won’t sit quietly by as he trades away protections for our public health and environment to industry polluters.

It’s vital that your voice be heard—tell the EPA that you oppose rolling back protections for our waterways under the Clean Water Act!

Don't postpone compliance for Effluent Limitation Guidelines and Standards for Steam Electric Power Plants (EPA-HQ-OW-2009-0819)

Dear Administrator Pruitt

I am writing to share my deep disappointment at your proposal to put an indefinite hold on compliance for the Effluent Limitation Guidelines and Standards for Steam Electric Power Plants. This 2015 rule was a long-overdue update to protect our communities, families and environment from lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and many other dangerous toxic pollutants that coal-fired power plants dump into our waters. Power plants are by far the largest source of toxic pollution in the U.S. and have contaminated over 23,000 miles of rivers. These toxins are linked to cancer and neurological damage, and they bioaccumulate in fish and wildlife, further harming public health.

I urge you to reconsider this damaging proposal. The 2015 Steam Electric Effluent Limitation Guidelines rule for the first time addressed the serious problem of toxic pollution from power plant wastewater. We simply cannot continue to ignore this problem.

Sincerely,
