A Non-scientist for Chief Scientist at the USDA?

Your senator is about to decide whether Sam Clovis, the Trump administration’s pick for chief scientist at the USDA, should be confirmed.
This is an open and shut case. For starters, the law requires the nominee to be a scientist. Clovis is not.
The role of the chief scientist of the USDA is responsible for managing the scientific research of issues ranging from food safety, nutrition, agricultural systems, plant health and climate change.
Nothing about Clovis’ record as a conservative talk radio host and Trump campaigner qualifies him for this role. He is certainly one of the most unqualified individuals nominated by President Trump to date, which is why we need you to urge your senator to oppose his nomination.
What the USDA needs is someone with an understanding of complicated scientific issues that affect agriculture here and around the globe—from pesticide poisonings of farmworkers, to pollinator declines and deteriorating soil health to the impacts of severe weather.
To top it all off, Clovis is a climate science denier—which could spell disaster for farmers in our country who are already feeling the impacts of more severe droughts, floods and other extreme weather.
From our nation’s farmworkers to our grocery store shelves and dinner tables, science at the USDA should be used to ensure that the food we feed our families is safe and sustainable. Sam Clovis is not the person who should oversee this.
Urge your Senator to oppose this nomination today.
